En lo que va del año, se han clausurado tres empresas por violar la norma oficial de emisiones y descargas, una en Matamoros y dos en el sur del estado, y en 2016 se aplicaron 634 inspecciones y multas por casi 4 millones de pesos a industrias contaminantes en Tamaulipas.
De acuerdo con la Procuraduría Federal de Protección Ambiental (Profepa), entre las 14 industrias analizadas se hallaron emisiones o descargas de arsénico, cianuro, plomo, cromo, mercurio, estireno, butadieno, bióxido de carbono, cadmio, cloruro de vinilo, y asbesto, cuyos compuestos son considerados altamente cancerígenos.
A través de un comunicado, la Profepa informó que en los primeros días del año, acudieron a una empresa ubicada en Matamoros dedicada al acopio y almacenamiento temporal de residuos peligrosos, y detectó que no contaba con la autorización de la Semarnat.
Ahí, observaron residuos peligrosos en condiciones inadecuadas para su manejo y almacenamiento por un periodo mayor a seis meses, contraviniendo las disposiciones oficiales de la Ley General de Prevención y Gestión Integral de los Residuos, por lo que se procedió a su clausura total temporal.
Las otras dos empresas que fueron clausuradas en el presente año se encuentran en el corredor industrial de Tampico- Madero- Altamira, específicamente en el municipio de Altamira.
En una de ellas, dedicada a la fabricación de envases y similares del vidrio,
la Profepa halló irregularidades en materia de emisiones contaminantes a la atmosfera, ya que contaba con la Licencia Ambiental Única (LAU) que otorga la Sermarnat.
Además, a través de estudios de monitoreo perimetral de las emisiones contaminantes generadas por la empresa, resultaron emisiones contaminantes excediendo los límites permisibles para la salud y el ambiente.
Lo anterior transgrediendo lo dispuesto en la Ley General del Equilibrio Ecológico y la Protección al Ambiente en materia de Prevención y Control de la Contaminación de la Atmosfera.
También, la Profepa clausuró una empresa dedicada al mantenimiento y lavado de tanques utilizados en el transporte de productos químicos.
En la inspección realizada se observaron irregularidades ambientales consistentes en el manejo inadecuado de residuos peligrosos, como el depósito de residuos peligrosos fuera del área de almacenamiento temporal; no envasar e identificar adecuadamente los residuos.

En el sur de Tamaulipas, dentro de la zona conurbada de Tampico, Madero y Altamira, 14 empresas industriales ubicadas en el corredor portuario provocan descargas al drenaje y emisiones de materiales tóxicos al aire y suelo.
